Bright F2.8, Wide-Angle 28mm1 LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT Lens
The LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens on the DMC-FX01 employs an extra high refractive index aspherical lens that makes it possible to incorporate a wide 28mm zoom into its compact body. Spanning all the way from 28mm to 102mm (35mm equivalent), this lens lets you capture everything from sweeping landscapes to shots with deep rows of skyscrapers. Compared with conventional 35mm lens, the DMC-FX01's wide 28mm zoom lens makes it easier to capture an indoor group photo or architectures and sceneries with dynamic width and rich perspective.

The Extended Optical Zoom function, which magnifies the image with minimal deterioration by using the center part of the high resolution CCD, boosts the zoom power to a maximum 5x2.

Taking Hand Movement Out of the Picture
with MEGA Optical Image Stabilization
All of us have taken a shot that we thought was focused perfectly, only to have it turn out blurry. The most common cause of this is hand movement. Digital cameras are wonderfully light and compact -- but for the same reason they can also be hard to hold still. Even pressing the shutter button can cause the camera to move. And most people use the LCD monitor (with arms outstretched)to frame a shot -- great for getting the shot you want, but most likely adds to the likelihood of hand movement. Basically, hand movement is a real concern anytime you're taking a handheld telephoto shot, macro shot or self-portrait, or when shooting at night or in dim lighting.
Optical Image Stabilzation OFF

Optical Image Stabilzation ON

The answer to the hand movement problem? An advanced optical image stabilizing system that we call MEGA Optical Image Stabilization. This system uses built-in gyrosensors to detect even tiny camera movement and then shifts a lens in the opposite direction to compensate. The system is completely optical -- it does not affect the CCD or image processing -- so you get sharp, clear images with minimal degradation. It lets you reduce the shutter speed more than 3 steps below3 the conventionally accepted hand movement limit, which is calculated as 1/focal length (1 divided by the focal length). It greatly expands what you can do with a handheld digital camera.

High Sensitivity Mode Helps Reduce Motion Blur
When there's not a lot of light or you're using a slow shutter speed, hand movement isn't the only potential problem. There's also "motion blur" -- the blurring that can result if your subject like children or pets move even a little in low lighting. That's why we added a High Sensitivity mode4 that allows you to shoot at up to ISO 1600 by using the pixel-mixed readout method, effectively raising the shutter speed. It not only minimizes motion blur, it also lets you take clearer, sharper shots in dim lighting without using a flash. The picture quality is good enough for printing at the ordinary 4" x 6" (10 x 15 cm) size.

A Large, Bright 2.5" Diagonal High-Resolution LCD with High Angle Mode
With its 2.5" diagonal size and 207,000 pixels, this high-resolution LCD monitor makes it easy to see text and small thumbnail images. The pixelmixed readout method performed by the CCD increases the brightness level of the live image on the LCD, which greatly facilitates shooting in low lighting. If it's difficult to see the display on a sunny day, simply press the Power LCD button and the display becomes about 40% brighter. The world's first5 developed High Angle shooting function also provides easier viewing when you're holding the camera high to shoot over the heads of people in front of you.

Quick Response and Comfortable Shooting
The DMC-FX01 starts up in just 1.6 seconds -- about 20% shorter than the DMC-FX9, has a release time lag as low as 0.005 seconds6, and can fire off up to 8 consecutive shots at 3 frames per second in Standard mode. It also has Unlimited Consecutive Shooting7, so you can keep shooting until the SD Memory Card is full. Furthermore, the 1-point high-speed AF is as fast as the DMC-FX9 to achieve outstanding focusing with speed and precision. You can shoot quickly, easily and accurately every time.

Up to 3208 Shots On a Single Charge
Thanks to the energy-saving Venus Engine™ Plus and a long-lasting battery, the slim DMC-FX01 lets you take shot after shot without running out of power. It takes up to 320 shots on a single battery charge -- about 18% more than the DMC-FX9.

35mm equivalent at wide angle.
Varies depending on the selected image size and aspect ratio.
Varies with shooting conditions.
When using High Sensitivity mode, resolution significantly decreases.
As of January 4th, 2006.
Not including auto-focusing time.
The consecutive shooting speed varies depending on the memory card or the built-in memory.
Based on CIPA. Battery charge time is affected by storage and usage conditions. Also, a longer shooting interval reduces the number of photos that can be taken between battery charges.
